Real Enemy in Nursing

REAL ENEMY IN NURSING I will like to start with a Yoruba adage which states that “kokoro to n jefo, ara efo lo wa” which simply means the real enemy is within. I have thought about so many things I have heard about Nursing and so many things I have seen myself before coming up with this write up. Many Nurses will say “the Doctors are the ones hindering the growth of the profession as they are always against the profession” but without a crack in the wall the lizard can’t have a place in the wall and in respect to this, if we are united in love and oneness, then other intruders won’t be able to get inside. In Nursing, due to envy and jealousy amongst ourselves, we lack love, unity, professional support, a voice (one voice) and the true act and spirit of unionism. All these things affects the growth of profession. So my fellow professional Nurses Who are the real enemies of our profession?? I still sat down to think on the reason behind all these things I mentioned above and I said Feminine but again I said to myself what about the males in the profession?? Probably they have also been feminized. In this profession I have seen males who act even worse than females and I have seen females fighting and working for the betterment and growth of the profession. So therefore my conclusion is that though feminism may contribute largely to it but it’s not just it. There is also this popular adage that “if there is no crack within walls then lizard cannot enter into the wall” My Answer: The real enemy of the profession are Nurses themselves. Nurses who are satisfied with the status quo Nurses who are satisfied with the present state they are Nurses who are not ready to sacrifice for their professional colleagues to benefit Nurses who don’t want their junior ones in the profession to move forward and higher Nurses who are not ready and willing to study more Nurses who give all vital information and secrets to the other counterparts Nurses who can’t stand by another colleague in the time of need and struggle Nurses who feels threatened when the junior ones are rising and achieving Nurses who are fixated and static without any attempt of being better or doing better for the profession Nurses who are timid Nurses who are lazy when it comes to performing duties being paid for Nurses who only supervise and complain without showing the desired leadership Nurses who frown at new inventions in the profession Nurses who get delighted when others fails or are failing Nurses who paint the profession black and are not proud of the profession Nurses who never see anything good in the profession Nurses who are always afraid of the truth Nurses who can’t influence the profession positively but instead make the profession static or even become worse Nurses who can’t and are not ready to take any risk for the profession Nurses who are just after money Finally, Nurses without a conviction of their own, who are easily swayed by others. All the above listed are the true enemies of the profession. Before I drop my pen today, I will like to state “it’s not about the title or post that matters, it is about the impact made in the profession in that capacity” This was what I heard from a woman who recently bagged PhD after years of studying in Nursing (Dr. Mrs A.B Awoseemo). I have not said all this to hurt anyone or specially directed to anyone, but for us to work on ourselves for nursing to be better and stop blaming others. We are Nurses and we are nursing and anything we do today determines wat befalls the profession tomorrow. So what will be our New Year resolution for the profession? Is it to continue as an enemy of/in the profession or is it to continue as being up for the better change in the profession/ stop being up for the better change as a result of frustration?? There is this Yoruba saying that “Ile ni ota wa, eyinkunle ni aseni ngbe” Which simply means that the real enemy is within. Nursing must be great Nursing must get there I am a Nurse and always proud to be one I am Orolugbagbe Joel O. Nurse with positive differences I reference Mr Ajayi Olawale Nurse with positive differences Dr.Mrs Awoseemo Nurse with positive differences
