Covid-19: Inside Osun State by Olabanji Joel
If not for Covid-19 there won't be any compulsion for the government to share food and money but since there is a need now, what has been happening within Osun State?
On one hand, It will be so unfair if the interventions of the government of Osun and that of many well meaning individuals are not appreciated.
Osun State relief materials were released about two days ago and it has since been going round together with the federal government intervention fund which the Governor said #20,000 will be given to 15,000 within the state. Many people asked of it's only 15,000 poor people that are in the state but for now, the money has gotten to some vulnerable individuals (cash delivery).
Before the intervention from the state to alleviate suffering, relief materials was said to have been delivered to the people of Ede by Deji Adeleke almost immediately the lockdown started. Many individuals and organisations have since been seen doing what they can do to alleviate the suffering of those they can reach.
From the political end, the Speaker Osun House of assembly, Hon. Timothy Owoeye representing Ilesa East LG distributed relief materials to the poor within the Local Government. Also, the Ilesa East Chairman and leaders within the LG also got relief materials for the vulnerable within the LG. Furthermore, Hon. L.B Ayeni representing Ijesa South federal constituency also got relief materials for the people within his constituency.
It was also gathered that Ife Local Government Chairmen and many well meaning individuals under the broad umbrella of Ife progressive forum gave out relief materials to the vulnerable within the Ife township.
Cooperate bodies such as Ijesa People In Diaspora (IPID) gave out money and relief items to the poor within Ijesa land.
Also, religious organisations were reported to be doing their own humanitarian services for the poor in the church and mosque.
On the other hand, I saw the report from a reporter in Osun state "Apagunpote Olayimika Chocomilo who pin-pointed the kind of rice being distributed around Osogbo axis and the quantity being distributed.
Also, some Osun indigenes complained about the quantity of materials they get from the government. Some said they got about one cup of rice and a cup of beans while many got one congo of rice with a congo of beans. The relief items for the poorest of the poor has been seen as something that can not alleviate suffering, some frustrated individuals complained while some said it's better than non.
The question now is " how will those without nothing survive"? Also remember that these items can't go round and may not be reached.
An individual involved in the distribution process within Ilesa Osun State told me that a bag of rice and a bag of beans was given to the community head of each street within Ilesa and directed to give only to poor. He further stated that any community head distributing a cup of rice and beans should be questioned but he however confirmed that a congo of rice was distributed in a particular street.
People are asking about what the intervention of many political leaders in the state is, still hoping to hear from the Senator representing Ife Ijesa senatorial constituency in person of Senator Fadahunsi and also the likes of Senator Famurewa who happens to be the past Senator who represented the constituency. Also, still hoping if any relief measure will come from the former state governor who is the present minister of interior (Engr. Rauf Aregbeshola), former Governor (Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola), Former Governor (Chief Bisi Akande), Alhaji Adeoti (2018 ADP Governorship candidate), Sen. Iyiola Omisore (SDP gubernatorial candidate) etc.
In conclusion, I will like to once again appreciate all the individuals and cooperate bodies who are doing so well to alleviate suffering within the state, more blessings I pray. Amen.
#Note: No one can say when all this will end but hunger in the society can frustrate people to doing what they won't be proud of. The question now is that "Can A congo of rice and beans sustain people for two weeks"?
#Note: A hungry man is an Angry man, frustration and desperation combined can cause a greater catastrophe compared to what Covid-19 might cause, therefore without prejudice, people need help more than ever and the joint effort of all is what can make the community a crime free one for all.
Thanks.
