SHOULD OUR HEALTH CARE WORKERS GET INFECTED WHILE TRYING TO SAVE THE INFECTED by Olabanji Joel.

WELL MEANING NIGERIANS SHOULD COMPLEMENT GOVERNMENT EFFORT IN SUPPLYING PPE TO OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITALS COMPLEX, ILE-IFE AND WGH ILESA OSUN STATE; should our health care workers get infected while trying to save the infected? - Olabanji Joel

Almost all hospitals both government owned hospitals and private hospitals have limited the number of people they provide health care to as only those with emergency conditions are being attended to and this has caused more damage than good. It's not the fault of any hospital limiting the patients they attend to, it's the situation we have on ground, the personal protective equipment in circulation is inadequate and also gotten at an expensive price.

I got a report earlier today about the effect of Covid-19 on health care delivery and health workers at the above named institution.

Note: The situation does not only involve the above named institution but all government owned institutions in Nigeria are suffering from insufficient PPE which has invariably caused a decrease in health care delivery and assess to the masses but for the sake of this write up, OAUTHC as an institution will be focused on.

The need for personal protective equipment to be used in caring for patients shouldn't be limited to those working in the emergency unit or the Isolation centre alone, it should be used by all health workers working in the institution because contact with an asymptotic patient can occur at any point in time putting the health workers at risk but the situation at hand now is so bad as insufficient personal protective equipment has made the health care delivery in the tertiary institution totally reduced and also life of health workers at risk.

About two months back, a usual patient of the hospital was refused case because the health workers insisted they can't risk their lives by working without PPE in this era of Covid-19 pandemic. Looking at this? Should we blame the health workers for refusing to take care of the sick without PPE or blame the government for the insufficiency in PPE?

From the report I got today, I was informed that some nurses and doctors while discharging their duties to save lives have been infected with Covid-19 and some battling for survival now.

SHOULD OUR HEALTH SYSTEM CRUMBLE BECAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT PPE or SHOULD OUR FRONT LINERS GET INFECTED WHILE TRYING TO SAVE THE INFECTED?

My call today is not to call on the government, it's to call on the well meaning Nigerians, Philanthropist and Indigenes of Osun State to come to the aid of the major Tertiary Heath Care facilities (OAUTHC IHU  and WGH) in the state, please nothing is too small to give, no amount of PPE is too small to donate, the Nurses and Doctors are trying to save lives, they shouldn't die while saving others, please this is the time to support the state. You can send it to the hospital directly or contact me by sending me a direct message of you want it to go through me.

COVID-19 IS REAL, PEOPLE ARE DYING AND OUR HEALTH CARE SYSTEM MUST NOT STOP FUNCTIONING OPTIMALLY. PLEASE HELP SUSTAIN THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.
