COMMITMENT, RESPONSIBILITY, INVESTMENT AND ENTITLEMENT by Olabanji Joel

I saw Pariolodo's video where he spoke against Mr Latin for not helping him and also for the statement made by Mr Latin that TAMPAN can't help actors who are not members of the association.

My opinion on this case will be linked to commitment, responsibility, investment and entitlement which will make me say that Baba Latin was not wrong for saying that the Movie association can't help those who are not part of them, how many actors and actresses can the association help?. The second response from Baba Latin that everyone of them knows what they spend on or should I say knew what they were spending on before isn't a bad one either. Pariolodo who was recently helped by Agbala Gabriel said in a video he made while responding to Mr Latin that he started acting while Mr Latin was still in secondary school, this statement could be true but it bothers my mind how Mr Latin have grown and developed himself despite starting as a nobody. Pariolodo and all other actors calling out for help now should not feel entitled to the wealth or investments of their colleagues or association which they haven't been committed to in any way.

Looking at old film makers/actors such as Jide Kosoko, Oga Bello, Ogogo, Dele Odule, Peter fatomilola, Iya rainbow etc, we can say not all old actors now live in penury, they might have started small but many of them are now living big. We can trace the life many people are living today to the life they have lived yesterday, their investments in themselves, properties and also how well they have invested in their Children's growth. The likes of Pariolodo and many (though not all) veteran celebrities living in penury today once earned money which made them rich in their time, so what has happened over the years?

Also, we can blame poverty amongst veterans to lack of relevance in today's evolved industry due to them not developing themselves when the industry was evolving. Many veteran actors or should I say celebrities have been pushed out of business by the younger ones due to being unable to meet the requirements needed to be involved in today's activities.   While some veterans are out of action, some of them who invested in themselves, their business and children could be seen flourishing today. I once heard the story of Adebayo Salami (oga bello) who is a relevant veteran today, how he suffered so as to remain relevant in the industry and also bring up his children in the right manner, he could have chosen to be stagnant or chosen to be an irresponsible father which would have only given him a miserable life in his old age.

All earners in the world spend differently, while some people keep part of their earning for tomorrow's uncertainty, some spend as if they would not live to see tomorrow. Enough of the entitlement mentality in Nigeria, it's eating too deep into our morals, enough of the emotional blackmail. Let's begin to encourage hardwork, investments both in physical items, people and in one's children. We can't build a working nation with irresponsibility being celebrated through different means.

Can the movie association help all film makers both young and old? No!

Is the association meant to cater for those who don't belong to the association? No!

Is the association meant to cater for her members? YES!

Are all Yoruba actors part of TAMPAN (Mr Latin's led association)? NO!

Should people be entitled to reap from where they haven't sowed? NO!

Can actors who are not part of the association be helped by the association? Yes, if decided and agreed by the stakeholders of the association.

We cannot keep celebrating any form of irresponsibility and expect a working country. As we grow, we should be responsible for the actions we take and the result that we get. I believe everyone has a problem, even those who seems to be wealthy have problems they are internally dealing with. It is good to call for help but it is bad to feel entitled to other person's wealth when you have not contributed to their success. A lesson for everyone of us is to live a life that will guarantee us a secured future and also ensure we develop ourselves in whatever we have at hand at the moment, a stagnant person cannot progress in a fast developing society.
